OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — The NBA is giving back to OKC, as the Thunder host the Finals. On Friday, league officials unveiled renovations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County.
What used to be a 3rd grade classroom has been transformed into what is now called the “Wonder Room.”
“During the NBA Finals, it’s tradition to bring the entire NBA family together to make an impact that will last far beyond the end of this series,” Thunder reporter Paris Lawson said.
The NBA Cares Finals Legacy Projects dedicated a newly refurbished learn and play center at the nonprofit.
“For literally decades to come, people can look back on a dedicational Boys and Girls Club,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said. “A generation of young people who grow up with the benefits that come from these dedications.”
The room has new technology, a reading nook and a mindfulness space.
“I just like how there’s so many different things for kids who have different interests,” Thunder legacy player Nick Collison said. “Some kids like basketball. Some kids are into the science. We have iPads, computers.”
The club also received more books, and furniture.
“I echo what Adam [Silver] said,” Thunder chairman Clay Bennett said. “Please take advantage of it. Please use it. Enjoy it. Make it yours.”
The NBA Foundation contributed a $25,000 grant to the nonprofit.
“The investment from the NBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Emirates that they have made today will change lives, and provide opportunities for kids for years to come,” President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County Teena Belcik said.
A similar dedication will happen in Indianapolis when the NBA Finals comes to their city.
