Fourth grader Roque (pronounced Rocky) and second grader Gerardo Sanchez joined the Santa Fe South Boys & Girls Club, 5325 S. Pennsylvania, at the beginning of this school year. Their parents Julia and Eduardo met with me a few weeks ago to express their appreciation for the difference the Boys & Girls Club has made for their children and their family.
With interpretation help from Roque, Mr. Sanchez said his sons both love coming to the Boys & Girls Club after school, to the point that even when Roque had strep throat, he begged to go to school so that he wouldn’t miss club activities that day! Their dad said that when they attended Adams Elementary last year, it was very difficult to get them ready for school in the mornings and that they would cry in hopes they could stay home. At Santa Fe South this year, the boys are up and ready at 6:00a although they don’t need to leave the house until 7:00a. Their dad attributes the new motivated attitude to their involvement with the Boys & Girls Club. Their school attendance has increased, grades have improved and their social relationships have grown.
Mr. Sanchez also noted that the boys’ mother speaks no English and that his command of the English language is very limited so they have been unable to help Roque and Gerardo with their homework. They are very thankful that their sons can get the academic support they need during Power Hour, homework time, at the Club every day after school. Last year Roque was in danger of being held back for poor reading skills, but his STAR Reading and Math scores have both increased to grade level this year. The boys talked about how making friends at the Club has also helped them get along with kids in other grades at the school. The Sanchez’s expressed deep gratitude for Ms. Amanda, Santa Fe South Boys & Girls Club Unit Director, and all the staff for giving their children such awesome opportunities.
